EURO2008

Croatia-Turkey - A Didactic Play

> Click here for German version

The quarter-final Croatia vs. Turkey last Friday has been the most exciting football match of the European Championship 2008 so far, however, definitely not due to its first 118 minutes. The drama took place in the last couple of minutes of the match during the additional time and the shoot-out. Out of a sudden Ivan Klasnic excited respectively chocked the viewers depending on whether they were Croatians or Turks with his goal in the 119th minute. Three minutes later only, just a second before the definitive end of the match, Semih Sentürk achieved the clearing goal. Again, the whole public was chocked respectively excited, depending on whether they were Croatians or Turks. Finally, during the shoot-out the Croatian kickers lost there nerves. While the Turks turned all shots in hits, the Croatians didn't even hit the goal twice and their last hit was kept by Turkish goal keeper. So far the game. What are the lessons learned for our business life?

  • The field is not a comfort zone: As long as you are out there you have to give everything. Consider, that the game takes up to 120 minutes.

  • The game is over only after the game is over: We have to be physically and mentally present until the final end. It's easier to take over the lead than to keep it.

  • A first goal is not the final goal: Don't underestimate your rival; otherwise he might surprise you.

  • However, celebrate each goal as a great success of your team. Be aware that without your people you would not have been able to make it.

  • Enclose yourself with people who believe in you: You will need them in hard times. They provide you the energy needed to overcome your physical and mental obstacles.

  • Be part of a team of mutual trust: You either win or lose together. Have a joined vision of your success. That reconnects you with your inner resources: Power, know-how and creativity.

  • Play fair not to loose important resources: Your rival is not your enemy but essential part of the game. Without a challenging rival you would not be able to show up with top performance.

  • After the match is before the match: If you won the game, it's just the begin of the next one. Therefore, it's not all about winning, it's playing itself, which should drive you.

Enjoy the half-final and the final of the EURO2008.
