Wherever life takes place it has its specific cycles: Summer, autumn and winter,
which means shooting &
blooming, thriving & prospering, harvesting & enjoying,
withering & fading. These are the cycles on which evolution moves
forward. It's not just the law of nature, but also the law of cultural
and individual life.
Look at the way the cultural evolution of mankind has moved forward by turning the cycles of life
so far (from a western perspective): Mankind started with the Babylonian
culture, which was replaced by the Egyptian Pharaohs, followed by the
Greeks and Romans, interrupted by the Dark Ages, revived by the modern
times: the discovery of the Americas, showing up with nationalism and
imperialism and today leading to globalization. The transition from each era
to the next mostly is accompanied by decadence, crises and disruptions.
While in the past wars took place like autumn and winter storms in those transition
periods, today the world's politicians - for the first time in history - try
to manage the change over from a nationalistic to a globalized world in
a peaceful manner.
How about the seasons of personal life? Childhood & education,
production & re-production, chill-out & retirement, aging & death? Each
transition time has its own crises: Adolescence, midlife-crisis &
geriatric depression, which are times of uncertainty and fear, conflicts and
revolution. In times of anything goes and devaluated traditions managing
ones personal development is a ongoing challenge. It requires a thorough
understanding of oneself, of who I am and ones strengths and
talents, of boldness and decidedness - and last but not least, good
people around.
Our economy is striving for unlimited growth and currently leading to
crises as we can hear in the daily news: global warming, environmental
pollution, deserting, overfishing... People strive personally for
unlimited youth and wealth. However, without an appropriate
understanding of those life cycles we won't be able to manage transition
times properly and to act accordingly. Neither on economic nor on
personal level.
